Hausberger was a member of an SS unit that shot dead thousands of Jews in today’s Ukraine and in Belarus. After the end of Nazi rule, Hausberger was mayor of Mayrhofen in the Ziller Valley from 1968 to 1982. Although people in the village knew about his crimes, no charges were brought against him. In 1984 he travelled to the USA as a tourism ambassador for Tyrol and it was in the USA that his participation in SS crimes became public knowledge. His party, the People’s Party, supported him both during the scandal and afterwards.
