Education at the House of Austrian History: The museum as a forum for discussion
What happened in the past? And what does this mean for the present? These are the central questions that drive educational activities at the House of Austrian History. Education creates space for shared and constructive encounters with Austrian contemporary history – in line with the House of Austrian History’s legal mandate to be a forum for discussion.
The Education Team offers tours and workshops for visitors of all ages, including a broad range that are specially created for school classes and trainees. Programmes are regularly updated and expanded according to demand. A member of the Education Team is always available at reception in the museum foyer to answer questions and discuss issues with members of the public.
The Education Department plays a crucial role within the museum. The department is involved in programme and exhibition development, as well as the drafting of exhibition texts. It is responsible for the conception and implementation of interactive stations, audio guides, support materials for the independent exploration of exhibitions and for school lessons, and accessibility. In addition, the Education Team is an important interface between museum operations and visitor services.

The Education Department can draw on a broad network: The House of Austrian History is an institutional member of the Österreichischen Verband der KulturvermittlerInnen (Austrian association of cultural educators), ICOM CECA Austria, the independent exhibitions platform schnittpunkt. ausstellungstheorie & praxis and the Society for History Didactics Austria. The House of Austrian History supports the Anti-Semitism Critique Initiative Group and regularly participates in meetings of the Working Group Inclusive Museum.
