Accessibility Declaration

The House of Austrian History (abbreviation: hdgö) is committed to ensuring that its website is accessible in accordance with the Web Accessibility Act (WZG), as currently in force. The WZG implements the requirements of Directive (EU) 2016/2102 on the accessibility of the websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies.

This accessibility statement applies to the website hdgoe.at, including all subdomains.

Information about the museum in simple German.

Compliance status with accessibility requirements

This website is partially compliant with Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and the European standard EN 301 549 due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

The House of Austrian History is constantly working to improve the accessibility of its digital services. The entire web platform, including all content and subdomains, is currently undergoing a major overhaul. This relaunch involves the implementation of extensive structural measures to improve digital accessibility and is currently scheduled for completion in 2029. Alongside this process, we will continue to identify and remove existing accessibility barriers wherever possible within technical and organisational constraints.

We apologise that not all content is currently fully accessible. If you encounter any barriers or require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us:

You can find accessibility information about our programmes at the museum under Accessible Events.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible or only partially accessible for the following reasons.

o On some pages, headings are not marked up according to their semantic structure.

o Some user interface elements, in particular buttons, are not yet fully accessible. As a result, operation via keyboard and use with assistive technologies may be limited. This applies in particular to the main menu, the function for skipping recurring content areas, and certain interactive exhibitions in the category “Contribute to Digital Exhibitions”.

o The search field currently does not provide error identification.

o Most video content on the website is subtitled. However, equivalent accessible alternatives are not currently available for the following audio and video content: videos within the category “Contribute to Digital Exhibitions”, the video “The Right to Vote! The Fight for Democracy Before 1918”, and the 1918 audio feature “1918 – Wer darf bleiben?”.
This contradicts guideline 1.2.1 of the WCAG (conformance level A)

o Alternative text is currently missing for numerous images and interactive graphics, or the existing alternative text is not sufficient.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 14 September 2020 and was last reviewed on 14 July 2026.

Compliance of this website with the requirements of the Web Accessibility Act (WZG) was assessed on the basis of an external evaluation of selected web pages, content and key website functions. This accessibility statement has been updated to reflect the findings of the review conducted on behalf of the federal government.
