Rudolf Lonauer (1907–1945)

As the director of the District Sanatorium Niedernhart and of the killing operations at Hartheim “euthanasia” centre, Doctor Rudolf Lonauer was directly responsible for the murder of thousands of people. Pictured together with his wife—an enthusiastic Nazi as well—and his daughters, he portrayed himself as a loving family man. Even after the programs to kill sick and disabled persons were officially ended, he continued murdering people at the institution in Niedernhart until April 1945. Shortly before the Nazi regime was defeated, he erased all the traces of any crimes and poisoned his family and himself to death.
