Herma Bauma (1915–2003)

Bauma was already a successful sportsperson in the 1930s. From 1937 she was employed by the municipality of Vienna and remained in her post after the “Anschluss” in 1938. In that year she also joined the National Socialist Reich League for Physical Exercise and the League of German Girls. In 1943 she joined the Nazi Party and, as a sports teacher, was involved in what was known as the Kinderlandverschickung programme (“sending children to the countryside”).
In 1947 she applied to be removed from the register of former Nazi Party members. In the late 1940s she got involved with the Communist Party as a sports official in the General Sports Association of Austria (ASVÖ). From 1967 to 1977 she ran the Südstadt Austrian High-Performance Sports Centre.
