Maria Mandl (1912–1948)
Concentration camp guard in the death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau
After Maria Mandl of Upper Austria lost her job at the post office, she built a career in the SS as a guard at a concentration camp. After being employed at the concentration camps Lichtenberg and Ravensbrück, she worked her way up to the highest-ranking female officer of the women’s section of the concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Mandl took part in the selection process, directly deciding on life and death. Among prisoners, she was notorious for her cruelty.
After 1945, Mandl was the only woman on trial in Krakow, where she was sentenced to death. She was among the few female Nazi perpetrators who received the maximum penalty after the war.
