August Eigruber (1907–1947)
Nazi Gauleiter (Provincial Leader) of Oberdonau (Upper Austria)
Immediately after the so-called “Anschluss”, the Nazi Gauleiter (Provincial Leader) of Oberdonau (Upper Austria), August Eigruber, sought to gain support for setting up a concentration camp in his province—which soon led to the construction of the concentration camp Mauthausen. Throughout the entire existence of the camp, Eigruber maintained close ties to the camp’s SS, and he was instrumental in creating catastrophic conditions. In addition, he made use of his authority: toward the end of the war he gave the command to send members of the Austrian resistance to the gas chambers and to ruthlessly chase down prisoners of war who had escaped in the vicinity of Mühlviertel.
After 1945, he was sentenced to death at the Mauthausen trials.
