Alois Brunner (1912–2001)

Collaborator in the organisation of expropriation, expulsion and the Shoah in Vienna, Berlin, Thessaloniki and Paris

In October 1942, Alois Brunner boasted that he had rendered Vienna “free of Jews”. He was in charge of the Viennese Nazi office responsible for deporting Jewish Austrians to concentration and death camps, such as Auschwitz-Birkenau. The “system” developed in Vienna forced representatives from the local Jewish community to cooperate. Brunner made use of the same procedure in Berlin, Thessaloniki and Paris.

After the end of the war, he went into hiding and fled to Damascus. He lived there under the protection of the Syrian government until his death.
