Reclining Figure (Selma Burke) – Hans Böhler

Drawing
Charcoal on paper, 1935

The American sculptor Selma Burke (1900–1995) studied in the mid-1930s at the Kunstgewerbeschule, now the University of Applied Arts, in Vienna.

Together with her partner Hans Böhler, she was active in the artistic circles of the Secession. Burke later stated that she had been preparing for a life in Austria. However, in 1937, as the influence of the National Socialists grew stronger, she left the country and returned to the United States. Böhler followed her shortly afterward and became a U.S. citizen. After the couple separated, Böhler returned to Austria. Selma Burke became famous and widely honored in the U.S., not least for her portraits of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington.

This charcoal drawing depicts Selma Burke during this period as an independent and intellectual woman, as seen through the loving perspective of her long-term partner Hans Böhler (1884–1961).
