Circling around Memory – Iris Andraschek & Anna Artaker
Art installation, 2023
The Nazi past remains a trigger for a whole range of debates, even today: How and where should remembering take place? What is a fitting way to deal with the victims and their stories? Which comparisons and references are acceptable? What can we do in the present day?
The installation on the ceiling conveys how the different standpoints become intertwined during these debates. Processes of remembering point to how public debates in Austria circle around how to deal with co-responsibility for Nazi crimes today. The resulting knot is difficult to unpick.
The four rings display quotes, which are constantly updated. Each individual ring focuses on one particular area:
→ Statements by people, who survived Nazi persecution
→ Headlines relating to current controversies and scandals
→ Responses from students given during a workshop at the hdgö exploring the question “What should we do?”
→ Titles of contributions submitted to the hdgö digital exhibition Memory culture of the Nazi past – sites and works in progress
