Anton Seelos (1911–2006)
Police officer and ski trainer
Seelos, a successful skier in the 1930s, became trainer of the national women’s team of Nazi Germany in 1936. After the “Anschluss” in 1938 he joined the Nazi Party and was a Sturmführer in the SA. As part of the Ordnungspolizei (Order Police) he was responsible for training police skiers and running mountain training courses.
After 1945 Anton Seelos remained a trainer with the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). The Federal Ministry for Education pushed for his return, arguing it was in “the national interest”. Seelos himself claimed to have joined the Nazi Party only to “secure his livelihood”. He remained at the ÖSV as a trainer until 1956 and also became known as a manufacturer of ski wax.
