Franz Doppelreiter (1922–2010)
Police officer, guard at Mauthausen concentration camp
Franz Doppelreiter of Lower Austria had been wounded in the war, after which he requested to be transferred to the Gestapo unit at the concentration camp Mauthausen. He was notorious for abusing the prisoners so brutally that they would die. In his spare time, he played on the soccer team of the SS guards at Mauthausen.
After 1945 he was initially sentence to death. After receiving a mitigated sentence of life-long imprisonment, in 1955 the National President issued a pardon and he was released. In old age he agreed to give an interview for a documentary for German television, where he denied being personally responsible for any of the crimes.
