March 13, 2020, Ischgl/Iceland
On 5 March 2020 a report arrived in Austria from the Icelandic health authorities: a large number of patients suffering from the new disease Covid-19 might have become infected in the Tyrolean ski resort of Ischgl. Nine days later the Paznaun Valley became the first region in Austria to be quarantined during the coronavirus crisis—after guests and workers had left. Many of them were infected and spread the virus throughout Europe. Whether local decision-makers bear joint responsibility for this is a matter for the courts. In the media, Ischgl became a byword for a coronavirus hotspot.
