‘Gold is easier to clean,’ the client is said to have told Joseph Urban, an architect from Vienna. And it didn’t take much persuading Urban. The 33 bathrooms of the extravagant beach house that Urban built for the rich industrialist Marjorie Post in Palm Beach were finished with gold-plated fittings. Urban was called the “architect of dreams” because he didn’t limit himself to designing art nouveau buildings, but also created stage sets for operas and Broadway shows after immigrating to the United States in 1911. The beach house in Florida is called Mar-a-Lago. It was completed in 1927 and was bought by Donald Trump in 1985.
