2004 Stockholm
Elfriede Jelinek is part of Austria’s literary conscience. Since the late 1960s, not only has she written about the shadows of the Nazi past, but also decried the subjugation of women in a patriarchal social order. She did so at a time when women and wives were just beginning to liberate themselves from the dominance of men and husbands in the eyes of the law. Jelinek’s plays and novels caused a number of scandals and she was often accused of treacherously denigrating her own country. In 2004, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm.
