February 1991, Maldives, Indian Ocean
Was the vibrant businessman Udo Proksch a murderer? After years of research by journalists, a parliamentary inquiry and the investigative work of Austrian courts, evidence uncovered by a robot submarine at the bottom of the Indian Ocean brought closure to one of the biggest scandals in post-war Austria. In 1991, the wreck of the Lucona, a freighter carrying scrap metal, was found off the coast of the Maldives. Proksch and his accomplice Hans Peter Daimler had arranged for the ship to be sunk by the work of explosives. Six seamen were murdered in this insurance fraud plot, and the ensuing scandal cost the jobs of several high-ranking politicians in Austria’s Social Democratic Party.
