To this day, the American musical The Sound of Music (1965) shapes perceptions of Austria and its population inter-nationally. Maryam Mohammadi came to love the film as a child in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War. It was only after she migrated to Austria that she became "Persian" and "Oriental" here. At the same time, she discovered that only a few Austrians had ever seen the film and that most are therefore unaware of the cliched images that exist of them.
