In the course of the disputes over Kurt Waldheim and his past, the need arose for a new daily newspaper for the liberal public given that reporting in Austria’s print media was often one-sided. After several years of preparation, the first issue of Der Standard appeared on October 19, 1988. The salmon-coloured paper was reminiscent of the London Financial Times as it, initially, was to primarily focus on economic and financial reporting, and was thus to be read as a business daily. The newspaper was founded by Oscar Bronner and is owned almost 100 per cent by his family foundation.
