In February 1974, semester breaks were introduced in Austria as so-called “Energy Holidays”. In reaction to the first oil crisis, four sequential weeks of semester holidays were arranged – one week in each of four different regions. These measures were supposed to save heating oil in hundreds of schools. Ultimately, the holidays became an impetus for winter tourism.
