Stitched Into Memory. In Remembrance of 67 People Killed in Hartheim in 1940
December 11, 2025–May 10, 2026
Foyer
On the trail of a family photo: When Ulrike Wieser came across a photo of her father’s cousin, Elfi Schlager, it brought to light a buried chapter in her family history. Elfi was ten years old when she and 66 other residents of the St. Joseph Institute in Mils/Tyrol were taken to the Hartheim killing facility and murdered there.
To this day, the victims of Nazi medical crimes remain on the margins of memory. Together with historian Melanie Dejnega, Wieser breaks through the silence and forgetting, working with academics, local historians and family members to fill in the gaps in the memory of these people. The result is an artistic installation of 67 embroidered photographs. Colourful embroidered flowers and names anchor the victims to their birthplaces and stitch them into memory culture.
An exhibition by Ulrike Wieser and Melanie Dejnega in cooperation with the House of Austrian History.
