Declaration on accessibility

Information on accessibility when visiting the museum are available here.

The Haus der Geschichte Österreich (hdgö) strives to make its web platform accessible - in accordance with the Web Accessibility Act (WZG) idgf for the implementation of Directive (EU) 2016/2102 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 October 2016 on the accessibility of the websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies (Official Journal L 327, 2.12.2016, p. 1).
This accessibility statement applies to the web platform www.hdgoe.at including all its subdomains.

Status of compatibility with the requirements

Due to the following incompatibilities and exceptions, this website is currently only partially compliant with conformance level AA of the ‘Web Content Accessibility Guidelines - WCAG 2.1’ or with the applicable European Standard EN 301 549 V2.1.2 (2018-08).

The House of Austrian History endeavours to adapt this website in accordance with conformance level AA of the ‘Web Content Accessibility Guidelines - WCAG 2.1’ or with the applicable European Standard EN 301 549 V2.1.2 (2018-08). However, the museum is currently in the process of relaunching the entire web platform with all content and subdomains, which is why major adjustments can no longer be made. Due to the scope of the platform and the resources available to prepare and implement this redesign, this process will take until 2028.

We very much regret this interim situation and apologise for the content that is currently not accessible. Please feel free to contact us by email at office@hdgoe.at, by telephone on +43-1-53410-801 or by post at Haus der Geschichte Österreich, Josefsplatz 1, 1015 Vienna, Austria.

You can find out how you can use our on-site offers barrier-free here.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is not accessible due to incompatibility with the accessibility regulations (WCAG):

o On some pages, headings are not semantically labelled as such in the source code.

o Some buttons are not semantically labelled as such in the source code.

o Many images and (interactive) graphics on the website currently have no alternative text. This contradicts guideline 1.1 of WCAG (conformance level A).

o Most of the video content on the website is subtitled. However, for the following audio and video content, there are no corresponding alternatives that provide equivalent information: Videos from the web exhibitions in the ‘Participatory Web Exhibitions’ category; Video: ‘Vote! Right! The fight for democracy before 1918’; Audio: Audio play 1918 ’Who can stay?’
This contradicts guideline 1.2.1 of the WCAG (conformance level A)

o Not all functions of the web platform are currently accessible via keyboard. For example, the main menu cannot be accessed via the keyboard. Repetitive content blocks cannot be bypassed. In addition, the web exhibition ‘Europe of Dictatorships’, as well as the interactive multimedia exhibitions under ‘Web exhibitions to participate in’ cannot be navigated using the keyboard. This contradicts guideline 2.1 Operable and 2.4 Navigable of the WCAG (conformance level A).

o The website's search field does not recognise errors. This contradicts guideline 3.3.1 Error detection of the WCAG (conformance level A)

o The name, role and value are not determined by the programming for all user interfaces. This contradicts guideline 4.1.2 of the WCAG (conformance level A)

On this declaration

This declaration was created on 14.9.2020, updated on 31.10.2022 and on 18.4.2025.
The assessment of the website's compliance with the requirements of Directive (EU) 2016/2102 was carried out in the form of a separate assessment of the basic components of selected websites by means of an evaluation in accordance with WCAG 2.0 AA in 2020.

Enforcement proceedings

If you do not receive a satisfactory response from the above contact option, you can submit a complaint to the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). The FFG accepts complaints electronically via the contact form linked here.
These complaints will be examined by the FFG to determine whether they relate to violations of the provisions of the Web Accessibility Act, in particular deficiencies in compliance with accessibility requirements, by the federal government or an organisation attributable to it.
If the complaint is justified, the FFG must issue recommendations for action to the federal government or the legal entities concerned and propose measures to remedy the deficiencies in question.
Further information on the complaints procedure can be found under this link.
