July 2015, Ephesus
One of the Seven Wonders of the World is in Vienna – or at least parts of it. Fragments of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus are on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in the Hofburg, right next to the House of Austrian History. This large Ephesus collection is located here because the Austrian Archaeological Institute has been carrying out the majority of the excavations in the ancient metropolis on the west coast of modern Turkey since 1895. The city of Ephesus itself attracts about three million international visitors per year which contributed to the UNESCO’s decision to add Ephesus to the World Heritage List in 2015.
