1980 Marampa/Lunsar
Many Austrian manufacturers have built up production networks in different parts of the world. Sometimes these networks have drawn on old colonial structures. In 1980, the Austrian steel production company VÖEST took over a former British mine in Sierra Leone on the coast of West Africa. Forty workers, many of them from the old Styrian mining town of Eisenerz, moved to the tropical country for several years. To this day, you can still see signs of this cultural merging, for example, the city of Eisenerz has its own “Marampa Pub” and Eisenerz football jerseys can occasionally be found in Sierra Leone.
