When Austria introduced the new, “hard” currency of the schilling in 1925, seven years after the end of the First World War, the young democratic republic was in the process of searching for its identity. In the series “In the Foyer,” the House of Austrian History, the Austrian Mint, and the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna display Austrian coins and coin images created between 1925 and 1938. These pieces reflect the political and ideological upheavals leading up to the “Anschluss” in 1938.
