Sophie Schasiepen

Sophie Schasiepen is part of the curatorial team at the House of Austrian History since September 2024.

Sophie Schasiepen studied Fine Arts, Cultural Studies and Historical Studies at the Braunschweig University of Art, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town. Her research focusses on critical museology, the history of science, and colonial history. She has worked for various research projects, including Utopian Pulse – Flares in the Darkroom at Secession Vienna (2014–2015, funded by the Austrian Science Fund) and Remaking Society, Remaking Persons Supranational Forum (2019–2021, funded by the Andrew Mellon-Foundation), Action for Restitution to Africa (2021–2024, funded by Open Society Foundations) and Reconnecting „Objects“: Epistemic plurality and transformative practices in and beyond museums (2022–2025, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation) at the University of the Western Cape. Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation (OeAD) awarded her the Marietta Blau-Grant (2015–2016) and she held a Junior Fellowship at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK) in Vienna (2016–2018). Since 2019 she has been a member of the editorial board of Bildpunkt, magazine of the Austrian Artists Union (IG Bildende Kunst Österreich).
