Franz Stangl began his career as a Nazi criminal as the administration manager and head of the office of the killing operations at Hartheim “euthanasia” centre nearby Linz. He was responsible for organizing and covering up the murders. He put to use the experience he gained there later on as the camp commander at the death camps Sobibor and Treblinka.
After the end of the war, with the help of Austrian bishop Alois Hudal, he fled to Syria and Brazil. It was not until 1967 and upon the initiative of Simon Wiesenthal that Stangl was arrested and extradited to Germany where he was sentenced to life-long imprisonment. He died in prison in 1971.
