1925 Japan

Some authors are popular in nearly every part of the globe. They write about the big ideas of their time, their works are translated into many languages and help bring about understanding across cultures. One such author was Stefan Zweig (born 1881) whose novella The Royal Game is still considered a classic. Zweig was one of the best known writers in the world during his lifetime and his works were translated into dozens of languages. He was particularly popular in Asia. In 1925, a Japanese translation of his biography of Romain Rolland was published in Tokyo. Zweig fled from Austria in 1934 and took his own life in exile in Brazil in 1942.
