Embroidered tablecloth made from a European Recovery Program food sack, ca. 1948
A white tablecloth with red embroidery made from a food sack used by the European Recovery Program (ERP). Also known as the Marshall Plan, the ERP was an aid programme run by the US government from 1948 to 1952 to support economic recovery in Europe after the Second World War. Money and goods with a total value of around 13 billion dollars were transferred to Europe. Austria received 962 million dollars in aid. High prices and ongoing shortages of fabric at the time meant that people reused textiles several times, usually reworking them at home for other purposes.
