The First World War had turned the psychoanalyst Freud, who initially supported Austria-Hungary, into a skeptic, not least because of his three sons’ experiences in the war and at the front. The political upheaval in Europe in the autumn of 1918 haunted Freud deeply. “I weep not a single tear for this Austria or this Germany”, he wrote elsewhere. On November 12, he must have been before Parliament and wrote an entry in his calendar.
