1933 Dreizehnlinden
Alpine folk dances beneath palm trees? Lederhosen in South America? Strange but true! From the 1860s, tens of thousands of people migrated from Tyrol to Brazil to escape poverty in their homelands. Among these Tyrolean communities in Brazil, the most famous is called Dreizehnlinden (or Treze Tílias in Portuguese) and was founded in 1933 by the former Minister of Agriculture, Andreas Thaler, who was originally from North Tyrol. During the Second World War, the Tyrolean colonists had their land seized when Brazil declared war on Nazi Germany, but it was given back to them after the war had ended. Today, the town is home to one of the largest dairies in the country.
