Toy pram made from a German Wehrmacht postal service crate, 1940/1947
From the outside a toy, from the inside an object of war: this toy pram is a contradictory relic. Superficially it is typical of the post-Second World War economy of scarcity. But on closer inspection, the object also tells a story of the long aftereffects of the National Socialists’ war of conquest. The pram was made by a former Nazi Party member for his daughter out of a Wehrmacht postal service crate. It had been used to send looted goods from France to what is now Austria. When the father converted the crate into a toy pram he may have put the address field on the inside, but he left it unchanged.
