In 2020, protests organised by the Black Lives Matter movement shone a spotlight on racism and violence in the USA and beyond. The murder of George Floyd by an American police officer ignited protests around the world. In Austria, the violent deaths of Marcus Omofuma and Seibane Wague are also evidence of structural racism – within the executive organs, in the media and in society per se.
In the middle of the coronavirus crisis, several tens of thousands of people also protested against racism and police violence in Austria. In doing so, the Black Lives Matter movement achieved greater visibility for the diversity of Austrian society and the civil society initiatives active here.
