Curator Tour: Transnational Austria
Guided tour with curator Sophie Schasiepen
This guided tour focuses on different moments in Austria’s history in which people shifted, crossed, or ignored state borders. They involve colonialist aspirations of the Habsburg empire, forced and voluntary emigration from Austria and migration into Austria, as well as civil society initiatives for or against specific borders and their effects on people’s lives.
We ask what transnationalism can mean, how it challenges notions of a homogeneous and static population of any given territory, and how it can enable a deeper understanding of a pluralistic democracy.
