of Austrian
History
Private recordings on audio cassettes were an easy and low-budget way of storing radio moments permanently. These “mixtapes” gave people the opportunity to design their own programme from what was on offer on the airwaves. Favourite songs were often passed around among friends or even gifted as a token of love.
What are your own personal radio moments?
Are you still holding onto any radio tapes today?
Add a photo of your personal mixtapes here! Show us the song that has always moved you and link to the music video on YouTube!
We welcome all contributions with photos. In addition to cassettes, such recordings were also collected on various other media, for example CDs, mini-discs, tapes, etc. Today, these kinds of compilations are often created as playlists on streaming platforms. If you’ve ever made a playlist with someone in mind – or had one made especially for you – we’d love for you to share a screenshot and tell us about it.
Your contributions can also be seen in the House of Austrian History at Heldenplatz in Vienna. Between February 2025 and January 2026, they will immediately become part of the exhibition “Es funkt. Austria between Propaganda and Protest” on the Alma Rosé Plateau on the second floor of the staircase.
