INFO

The collapse of communism in 1989 shook Central and Eastern Europe. For decades, many people lived behind completely closed and heavily guarded borders. Now, as they took their first steps across the former “Iron Curtain”, they brought their cameras with them. They documented the border itself as well as the world beyond it and their first encounters. Here we show your personal views of one of the greatest historical transformations of the 20th century – through your own pictures and videos. You can then see your contribution the next time you visit our exhibit: “Into the Unknown – Austria Since 1918” on the Heldenplatz in Vienna. This online exhibit creates a unique mosaic each time. Every click of a plus expands the picture. Videos and pictures that are side by side, also have something in common.

DESCRIPTION
Even before the famous “Pan-European Picnic,” some East German refugees were able to flee across the border to Neckenmarkt. Uwe, the first GDR refugee, told us that thousands of GDR citizens—children, young people, even entire families—were waiting in the Sopron area at campsites and rest stops, just waiting to flee across the border to Austria.
